A solar panel receives energy from the sun and transfers the energy to a controller inside the solar energy system, where the energy is converted into electricity. A solar panel is made of photovoltaic cells in different sizes depending on the rating of each panel. There are three basic types of solar panels for a solar energy system.

How Do Solar Panels Work ?

Solar panels, an alternative to traditional electricity generation methods, are becoming more popular. Solar panels generate power using solar energy.

  • Solar panels comprise smaller units called photovoltaic cells. These cells when linked together make up a solar panel. Photovoltaic cells are generally made of two slices of silicon.
  • Photovoltaic cells need to establish an electric field. In the top layer of silicon, phosphorus is placed, to create a negative charge. Boron is placed into the bottom layer, which will result in a positive charge. This creates an electric field at the junction between the silicon layers.
  • When sunlight touches an electron, it will be pushed out of the silicon junction by the electric field.
  • These electrons are converted into usable power.
